The Adventure Part Two

Date November 14, 2008

Tomorrow I jump on a plane to visit some college friends in Missouri then off to the Hendricksons for Thanksgiving. Then off to Michigan with Jared and his family.

I have a contract to return to Antarctica in February for the 2009 season. As long as I make it through any government cutbacks.

Sitt’n in the Airport

Date October 28, 2008

I am traveling back to the US. I have a total of about 11.5 hours of layovers starting with the 2 hours of wait time now.
Considering all the news from the US on elections, war, and money I am not really all that excited to come back. Immigration in to NZ is not that difficult. I will have to consider that.

Tramping around Middle Earth

Date October 13, 2008

Lamb_-116 Ken and I just returned from a great trip around the South Island of New Zealand. Put up a few pics on my flickr site, with more to come. A fantastic way to see NZ. Ken took me on a lot of back roads so lots of off roading, we took a lake cruise to see a Power Plant that services only one business, an Aluminium Smelting Plant, and several tourist spots. Lots of photos and waterfalls. From sea level on the South Pacific to 1100 meters in the Crown Range Mountians.

Date October 7, 2008

The plane has finally left CHC. Looks like I may get to leave the Ice and start vacationing…

7 Delays

Date October 7, 2008

Well one week later and I am still here. The weather is looking somewhat cooprative today so maybe. There are no delays reported yet and the military is under a lot of pressure from the NSF to get people in and out. SO maybe I will make it out of here today.

We are not going anywhere…

Date October 4, 2008

Tomorrows delay will be number 6. There were a few days this week that we should have had flights. The last two days have been perfect for more than half the day. Not to mention the optional night flights that the Military is now qualified to do and have had several very good opportunities to take advantage of. The Military caused a great media stir a few weeks ago with their “first time ever…” landing on the ice at night during which they are said to have certified several pilots to fly and land at night on the ice.

While there are about 25 of us waiting to get out of here and on with our travels, there are over 400 people (staff and scientist) in Christchurch waiting to get on the ice. I can not imagine the cost to Raytheon for the hotel bills.

Science, of which we are here to support, is at a complete standstill as several key members are sitting in CHC on Raytheon’s dime, losing research time which they will mostly likely not get back.

I personally have already missed some great plans in CHC with friends who are working on a pit crew for a Classic Car Race this weekend. I would have gotten to be there and gotten some great pictures. Not to mention some fresh fruit!

Maybe I should turn my count down in to a count up. No sign of getting out of here soon.
